# Stand Out in Your Job Search During the Holidays

#### It’s that time of year when everyone runs around insanely busy with all the holiday preparations, parties, end-of-the-year planning, and vacations. So, should you bother looking for a job right now? Yes, you should be. It is the perfect time to look for and get your resume out there. Organizations are still hiring and interviewing.

#### Here are 4 tips to stand out during the holidays:

- #### **Update your resume.** This is the perfect time to ensure that your resume is up-to-date and your personal brand is on point. Your resume should reflect your achievements and the value you brought to your employer and provide evidence to support it. Potential employers want to read what you did and how you did it. They want to see how you will add value to their organization. Do not just provide a list of what your daily activities entailed.
- #### **Continue to apply and be prepared for potential interviews.** While it is true that some organizations slow down on their searches or put them on hold during the holiday season, it’s a myth that organizations don’t hire in December. There are many who are still actively looking and interviewing in December. Some organizations are trying to fill positions before the end of the year and need people to start in early January. Interviews and offers are happening all through December. This can give you a major advantage as hiring managers who are looking to fill positions before the end of the month or in early January have a smaller pool of candidates who are applying for positions.
- #### **Use holiday events to network.** The holiday season is a time when parties and gatherings are happening. If you attend a holiday social event, you may hear about new opportunities bubbling up while meeting a new acquaintance. Accept all the invitations you receive, both personal and professional. You never know who might be there.
- #### **It’s a great time to rekindle former contacts.** The holidays are a great time to reach out to former colleagues, bosses, and friends, asking them if they’d like to meet for coffee or hop on a call. Most people enjoy hearing from a past co-worker or friend, especially if it means they have the opportunity to catch up on personal or work details. Now would be a good time to ask these people if they would also serve as a professional reference.
